Denise Waldrep, Candidate for SC House District 13 (Greenwood County)

Why did you choose Emerge?

I chose Emerge because of the structure and purpose of the program, and because I knew that if Jillian Hollingsworth and Mary Geren were part of the program, it would instructive.

What office are you running for and why?

I am running for South Carolina House of Representatives, District 13 which covers Greenwood County.

What is your vision for your community?

Healthy families, effective education of all our students, and sustainable stewardship of natural resources are what I envision for Greenwood County’s future.

What/Who inspires you to run for office?

The excellent 2020 women presidential candidates and also Mary Geren, Lee Turner and Marguerite Willis who ran in the midterms have inspired me to step into the ring. I think we need an educator such as myself who is knowledgeable in both the arts and science; this is greatly needed in our state government.

Which Democratic woman inspires you and why?

Mary Geren: she’s not afraid of taking on the big dogs, she gets back up after mistakes or missing her goals, and she’s a teacher who’s engaged with what’s going on outside the classroom as well as inside the classroom.

What is one thing you gained from Emerge and would like to share with others?

From the Emerge South Carolina Boot Camp, I gained an incredible amount of practical knowledge, a connection with strong women who are also ready to step up to serve/lead the public, and a sense of hope and encouragement.
