Helen Pendarvis, Candidate for SC House District 35

Why did you choose Emerge?

I choose Emerge because Emerge doesn’t just train Democratic women to run, it give women that normally wouldn’t run, the courage to run.

What office are you running for and why?

I am running for South Carolina House District 35 for 2 reasons. The first being that my current representative is not accessible to the people of District 35. He is never seen at community events, he doesn’t return phone calls or respond to email.  Secondly because our state government does not look like the people that it represents; ethnically or economically and that needs to change expeditiously.

What is your vision for your community?

My vision for District 35 is clean and safe rivers, lakes, and streams for our children to enjoy. Equitable distribution of funds for education, and more low income housing for those that make more than minimum wage but not enough to afford the current housing in the area.

What/Who inspires you to run for office?

My 10 year old daughter with her wide eyed innocence and keen sense of right and wrong and equity inspires me to run and be a better human.

Which Democratic woman inspires you and why?

I am most inspired by Maxine Waters with her matter of fact no nonsense approach to legislation and in her service to her community and the people of this country

What’s the one thing you gained from Emerge and would like to share with others?

The one thing that I gained most of from Emerge is courage.  I am an introvert  and the first time I ran I wasn’t very out going but Emerge has given me the courage and the skill to “work a room”
