Why did you choose Emerge?
I wanted to be a part of a larger movement of smart, powerful women that are changing the world one race at a time.
What office are you running for and why?
Charleston County Sheriff- I want to bring the Community back into policing, instill transparent and fair policing practices, and battle systemic corruption that has degraded the profession and divided communities.
What is your vision for your community?
Implement bold restorative justice practices to reduce recidivism and subsequently our jail population. Change the organizational culture from within and restore communities’ faith in our law enforcement, particularly in communities that have been unfairly targeted.
What/Who inspires you to run for office?
I was convinced I needed to run for office after the mid-term elections when this amazingly diverse group of incredible women stepped up to have a voice for those who didn’t have one. That was a moment that moved me and forever changed my direction in my career.
Which Democratic woman inspires you and why?
I could not name one particular women but rather a group of brave, smart, forward thinking women around the country and within the state who have stepped up when told to sit down. I meet women daily that encourage me to push forward, and that is enough for me.
What’s the one thing you gained from Emerge and would like to share with others?
I think more than anything, I have learned that I will never be alone, that there is always someone there to help and problem solve. More than that though, there is a certain level of mutual trust and respect because when I talk to women, I know they are listening, they understand, and have my back!
